Best Coast

Pretty cool new track from the ever popular fad of lo-fi pop music. Best Coast is comprised of Bethany Consentino of Pocohaunted and her friend Bob Bruno. They say to expect "songs about summer and the sun and the ocean and being a lazy creep with drums, Beach Boys bass lines and other amazing things". Very strong track from this hit-or-miss genre in my opinion, and I can't seem to stop listening to it. It definitely brightens my day on this gloomy Tuesday. Give it a listen and see what you think.

Daytrotter: The Avett Brothers

Thanks to our friend over at Radio Cure for the heads up on this one. Check out The Avett Brothers' Daytrotter session which includes a previously unreleased track and a song off of their upcoming album I and Love and You. Excellent stuff. Can't wait for their appearance at the Lyric Theater in Oxford, MS on September 22nd. Enjoy.

Our Lady Peace

For those of us who held onto Our Lady Peace's 1997 release Clumsy as though it's loss would create a chasm in our souls can look with new hope on the current state of OLP. After several years of conflict and horrible albums, Our Lady Peace has returned with "a proper rock album again" according to lead singer Raine Maida. Citing conflicts with major labels as the driving force for the bands hiatus of good art, Maida is hopeful that todays release, Burn Burn, will bring the band back together in a way that they have not been in almost a decade. As a former fan, I can only hope this turns out to be the case. Whether you return for nostalgia, to rock, to mock, or just to check back in on an old favorite, the time to return appears to be now. You can stream the album at their website www.ourladypeace.net or you can check out the video for one of their singles.

News from the Sufjan front...

Asthmatic Kitty records has sent out a press release citing the release of Stevens' The BQE, 'a visual and musical homage to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.' The production was performed back in October 2007 but after much debate Sufjan has decided to release it in DVD form. Asthmatic Kitty writes:

The release date is set for October 20, 2009. The double-disc album will include the original film on DVD, the original soundtrack on CD, a 40-page booklet (with photos and liner notes), and a stereoscopic image reel (aka View-Master®), created by illustrator Stephen Halker.
The limited edition vinyl is available as a double gatefold and includes the soundtrack on 180-gram vinyl, a large-scale 32-page booklet with liner notes and photographs, and a 40-page Hooper Heroes comic book.

You can watch the trailer for The BQE below, but look for it out this fall.

Englishman

I wanted to give a heads up on the Lexington, Kentucky band Englishman whose alt-country swooning has held my attention lately. The band includes guitarist Justin Craig who is mainly known for his work with the band These United States and lead singer Andrew English for whom the band takes a similar name.

The following was sent to Grit Music from their PR company:

Their self-released debut EP “Taxidermy” recorded mostly in English’s apartment doesn’t drift into lo-fi obscurity but rather is a polished documentation of a mature songwriter grappling with his growing pains. Netherlands blog Here Comes The Flood wrote about Englishman, “Hints of Richard Thompson and Bonnie “Prince” Billy are plentiful.” Two of my favorites from the EP I’d suggest checking out are the nostalgic “Horseshoes” and the inventive and catchy “Ugly Rainbow.”

Englishman recently played a handful of shows in New York City and Canada. To date, Englishman have played shows with Elf Power, Stars, Clem Snide, Fruit Bats and LAKE, among others.

The band has steadily been grabbing the attention of careful listeners far and near. At the end of June they were in Rock Island, IL recording a Daytrotter session and will support Deer Tick and Dawes in their hometown in July.

You can stream their EP Taxidermy here. Enjoy!

Jaydiohead Encore

Jaydiohead has released a five song encore to his original Jay-Z and Radiohead mixtape masterpiece. You can get the new release for free here. I cannot rave about this enough. The original is still available for download as well.

Surprise!

Per yourstru.ly:

We’ve all been there…You’re sitting in a Mexican restaurant, polishing off a monstrous burrito, orange grease dripping from your fingers, when suddenly, six sombrero’d individuals burst through the door and start serenading you without warning or remorse. At Yours Truly, there’s only one thing we love more than burritos and that’s great music. So we decided to combine our dueling passions for a new series we call, Banditos. The inaugural episode of Banditos featuresDent May and His Magnificent Ukulele singing “Oh, Paris” to the unsuspecting patrons of Tacqueria Cancun, home of the greatest super tacos known to man.I met Dent, Tommy, Carr and Bobby at the Independent, where they were scheduled to play their first ever SF show as part of a great Saturday Night bill during Noise Pop ‘09. With Young Jeezy’s Thug Motivation blaring through the van’s speakers, I stuffed myself in the way-back seat to explain our idea of barging in on burrito enthusiasts just like a Mariachi band, only without the guitarrĂ³n and tip hat. The guys nodded in loose agreement (they may have been nodding at Jeezy’s killer adlibs) and passed the short trip to the mission by talking about their tour, and singing the “Full House” theme song.

Back to the Way It Should Be

Jay Z is not the only one fed up with the way hip-hop music seems to be heading. D.C. rapper WALE (pronounced WAL-AE) has released his 2009 mixtape Back to the Feature which appropriately takes rap music back to the where the future of hip-hop is. It's an aptly named album seeing as WALE is one of the highly touted MC's in the "freshman class" of hip-hop, a group that seems to be "trying to preserve hip-hop" to put it in WALE's own words. As far as I am concerned WALE is the next best thing in the hip-hop world. He has an unbelievable taste for lyric as well as a pretty firm understanding of how music is functioning in this new digital age. Need evidence of this? Feel free at anytime during this post to go HERE and download Back to the Feature for free. You can find last years mixtape The Mixtape about Nothin for free as well. Don't let his confidence, "I remain a giant and you Jeremy Shockey," turn you off. The man has a work ethic to back up his lyrical abrasiveness. You can find his newest hit posted on the playlist, but I strongly recommend heading over to his myspace page and picking up what he has to offer.

Death of Autotune?

Not according to the debut LP from Discovery, the dynamic collaboration between Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles. The debut release from this collaboration is appropriately entitled LP, and is packed full of synth and reverb and yes, the Jay-Z detested autotune. All in all however, I have found Discovery to be quite enjoyable and certainly worth the listen. This is not your standard synth fronted indie rock band, but seems to mesh a little bit more of the current hip-hop sound behind their soaring vocals. There is a fantastic remix of Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on there that I think everyone should listen too. The album is available for stream here, and you can hear their song "Osaka Loop Line" in the playlist.

RUBIK

When it comes to the Finnish indie-rock scene, there is really only one band that you need to look for. Rubik, whose US debut Dada Bandits is due out September 15, has been a mainstay on the European music scene with their debut album Bad Conscience Patrol. While sharing territory with the likes of Faith No More, Pmmp, and Tapio Rautavarra leaves Rubik a bit out of place, they are proud to find their art-rock actually has owned a little real-estate in the oversaturated market of mayhem that has come to define the metal heavy Finnish charts. Dada Bandits has a true art sound with numerous instruments making appearances and Artturi Tairi's vocals floating over with a persistent edge. I am looking for this band to make a serious splash in upcoming months with a sound that is really hard to dislike or disregard. Their US based publicity company has been kind enough to give Grit Music an mp3 stream off of their new album, enjoy it below and look for the album out this fall.
