New Video: Phantogram - "Mouthful of Diamonds"

MGMT - Flash Delirium

Bizarre video to go along with a sub-par song. Did I say it's bizarre?

I am still listening...

Mumford & Sons, the UK folk rock outfit, still has my ears burning for their album Sigh No More.  Here is video they recorded for AOL in studio.

Lissie Covers Lady GaGa

and go figure, it sounds exponentially better than the original.  Here's our previous post on Lissie.  Thanks to FatPossum and TripWire for the heads up on the video.

In The Dark

The Whigs released their third full length album, In The Dark, last week. It marks the first record with all three current members in the studio together, and the product is not what you might expect from the Athens trio. With haunting similarities to their tour mate’s, Kings of Leon, latest record, In the Dark seems to have progressed The Whigs away from their raw rock sound to more produced-sounding tracks. Frontman Parker Gispert’s trademark raspy vocals are less present and the songs lack that airy, simple feeling of their two previous records. It will be interesting to hear the album live, as I am sure their energy and passion will provide a missing quality that the studio could not encompass. Catch them in our area soon:
Nashville: 4/7
Athens: 4/8
Birmingham: 4/10
See the play list for the one track I have been able to enjoy multiple times, “I Don’t Even Care About the One I Love”.

SXSW

Can't make it to South By but wishing you could get in on the action. NPR has hosted numerous concerts and many of them are available for video and audio stream at their website. Some notables include Surfer Blood, Broken Bells, and Spoon. It's the best way to be here without being here. I visited the PASTE magazine party yesterday and caught Free Energy and Joe Pug. Both were impressive. Free Energy, which was produced by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, was great for the fact that I really didn't have any preconceived notions, and Joe Pug because he lived up to what I expected. Adam is here with Dead Gaze and I am sure will have some news coming in soon.

Over Expectations?

OK GO makes good music, but they make great videos. At some point they are not going to be able to outdo the video that they did before. That did not happen this time. Check out their video for "This To Shall Pass."

Broken Bells on Letterman

This album is really good. I strongly recommend it.

New Track: Cults - "Go Outside"

Looking like a pop day here on our site, but either way, the weather's getting good.  Check out this band from New York and get their 3 song EP for free at their bandcamp site.  If this doesn't make you think of spring...who are you?

Cults - "Go Outside"

[UPDATE]: By the way our buddy Len Clark will be on Jimmy Kimmel tonight playing drums for Manchester Orchestra.  Tune in or TiVo.

New Video: Matias Aguayo - "Rollerskate"

I came across this track last year on Said the Gramophone's site and really enjoyed it.  Now finally there's a video for it.  Although the video doesn't do much, I think the hook is so sick.

News & Notes

Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse took his own life on Friday.  He shot himself in the heart in Knoxville, TN. He was 47.  This comes right before his collaborative effort with Danger Mouse, Dark Night of the Soul, was scheduled to finally see the light of day.  Get his albums.

Lil Wayne was sentenced today for his attempted criminal possession of a weapon back in October.  He is sentenced to 1 year, but may only be there 8 months with good behavior.

Stream the live White Stripes album from their documentary Under Great White Northern Lights.  It's due out March 16th and you can listen at NPR through the release date.

Also, I hate Justin Bieber.  Watch Aziz Ansari, Dave Sitek, and Nick Zinner skit.

Jackson Impromptu Concert Series

Last night was the first installment in the Jackson Impromptu Concert Series.  These first shows featured local talents Johnny Bertram and Wooden Finger performing in an old classroom in the Duling School in Fondren.  Here's the description from the Facebook page : "The Impromptu Concert Series is an out of the box musical experiment aimed at promoting local artists in intimate settings exploring Jackson's unknown venues. Concerts are at random times with random artists in random spaces around Jackson."  Sign up, fools for info on future shows!

Nice Weather

As some nice weather approaches the southeast, here's a nice little pop gem from a band called Stornoway from the UK.  Sounds pretty good for Spring even though two members look like Abercrombie models, they wear stupid hats, and the lead singer looks like a huge jerk.  The song is entitled "Zorbing".  Enjoy.

Playlist Update

Can't sleep so I updated the playlist with some new tunes from this young year.  Check 'em out.  Oh, and as luck would have it, playlist.com didn't have half the tracks I wanted.  Don't blame me, but here are a few.

Speaking of playlists, NPR has The Austin 100: A SXSW Mix for 2010.
