The fall is shaping up nicely in Oxford with plenty of spots to fill. The Lyric has already lined up some great shows to back up its reputation as one of the South’s best venues. After re-opening its doors two years ago, the renovated theater on Oxford's Square has already impressed with its ability to land some big name acts. A few notables booked this fall to add to the résumé:
On tour with Delta Spirit, The Romany Rye is turning a few heads.Well at least mine.I am slated to see them Saturday in Birmingham and think they are worth checking out.I bought tickets to see Delta Spirit and hesitantly bought the Romany’s eight track record. But I am definitely going to make it to Bottletree early to see them open up… With a classic folk/rock feel, it’s hard not to enjoy them.I’m not going to attempt pinpointing influences as there seem to be so many possible comparisons, but the bottom line is… the music is good.A few nearby tour stops:
Our boys from Oxford, Colour Revolt, have been through a lot of changes as of late. The most notable of these changes has been the departure of their long time bassist, guitarist and drummer. Jesse and Sean have pretty much had to wipe the slate clean and start all over again. New members, new management, new booking, new record, New Fear (the bands self started new label). Their new record entitled The Cradle is scheduled for release on August 10th of this year and you can pre-order it over at their myspace. PASTE has a nice little write up on their transition here. Check out a song from the forthcoming album below.
I came across these “Samplers” on Amazon and thought I would share.Various record labels have put together some 2010 Sampler records of their artists.Great way to hear new music… FREE!Take a look here…
Meridian, Mississippi M.C. Big K.R.I.T. found his way into the annals of indie music when Pitchfork posted his song "Country Shit" as one of the best new songs out there right now. The amazing opening line of the article "Country Shit: An entire aesthetic conveyed in two words" drew me in pretty quickly and I found myself blazing through rap blogs reading about this 22 year old 'phenom'. He samples hard and his mixtape "K.R.I.T. wuz Here," which is free for the taking right here, even has a reward ("$1000 cash and a pan of Johnny Shipes famous brownies") for the first person who can name all the samples used in the tape.
K.R.I.T.'s sound is obviously southern and to me has a lot of the rings and rhymes of early three-six mafia with a more current mix-mash of beats. His sampling habit isn't really a southern rap staple so he has blended some the more traditional with some of the newer vibes coming out of hip-hop today. Aesthetics aside, the mixtape is just straight fun. The first song "Return of 4eva" got my head nodding almost immediately and the whole 19 song tape took off from there. Below is track four off the mixtape (slight language warning).
Once again, you can pick up the whole mixtape "K.R.I.T. wuz Here" --> HERE
Thanks to @dentmay for the heads up and P4K for the info.
