Sanders Bohlke: New Single EP + New Interview

Our boy Sanders Bohlke has a new EP single on iTunes featuring the tracks "Somewhere" and "The War". He also has plans of releasing it on 7" vinyl single very soon. Click on his name to head over to his MySpace page to stream the new tracks and then head on over to iTunes and buy 'em. Here is a new interview and good write up on Sanders from PopDose that explains how artists these days can keep the ball rolling with a decent management team, a little TV hustle, and no record label.

Double Check Your Head

I'm sure you all remember Max Tannone, maybe not his name, but definitely what he put out in the past few months. He's the dude behind all the Jaydiohead mashups that we've posted on the blog in the past and now he's showing some love to the Beastie Boys. He made this project in support of the Beastie Boys recent reissue of their Check Your Head album. The concept is simply the Beastie Boys are mashed up with themselves, rapping over tracks sampling their own instrumentals, with all the vocals and sampled elements coming from Check Your Head. If you know me at all, my personal fav is obviously "3's What'cha Want". Check it out.

New Song from The King Khan & BBQ Show

The King Khan & BBQ Show are set to release a new album on November 3rd entitled Invisible Girl via U.S. label In the Red. In support of the new album they will also launch a North American tour beginning on October 17th with a stop in Memphis at the Hi-Tone on November 10th and Nashville's Exit/Inn on November 11th. You can hear the title track off the new record below and "I'll Never Belong" has been added to the playlist.

The King Khan & BBQ Show - "Invisible Girl"

No, I am not referring to the looming college football season. Fun is a new trio out of Brooklyn composed of members from The Format, Anathallo, and Steel Train whose sound is big (and fun) enough to remind me of 80's big bands like Styx and Abba while keeping me under the influence of current indie-pop. Listening to their album was like being in the audience of a high-profile, loud, poppy, Broadway sensation. Literally, you could put a costume on and run around your house pretending to be on the big stage. Think Mamma Mia or Hairspray or something along those lines. All this serves to cheapen the album a bit, but somehow the horns, violins, tubas, and toy pianos kept me listening. Hey, it's fun, so why not give it a try. Drake is considered a member of what is being called "The Freshman Class" in the hip hop game, which also includes Wale and Kid Cudi, among others. These are supposed to be the guys who are considered the next generation and have been given the daunting task of saving the declining genre of hip hop. As my buddy Drew says, "Eminem is swine flu, Drake is fresh air". Check out his latest release on the playlist featuring Kanye West, Lil' Wayne and coincidentally Eminem. They might be on the right track.

R.I.P. Jim Dickinson

As the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports, renowned Memphis producer and musician James Luther "Jim" Dickinson died this past weekend, passing away in his sleep after heart surgery. He was 67. During his lifetime, Dickinson left his mark on the careers of an astoundingly wide-ranging number of musicians, from Aretha Franklin to the Replacements, Bob Dylan to Big Star. Before he became famous behind the boards, Dickinson started out in front of the mic. In 1966, his band the Jesters released their single "Cadillac Man" on the already legendary Sun Records. He went on to become a session player, forming the Dixie Flyers, which became the Atlantic Records house band. In that band, he backed up artists like Aretha Franklin and Little Richard. In 1969, he played piano on the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses", thereby securing a place in heaven if there's any justice in the universe.

Later in his career, Dickinson worked as a producer, recording classic albums like Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers and the Replacements' Pleased to Meet Me. He played on Bob Dylan's 1997 album Time Out of Mind, and Dylan called Dickinson a "brother" when he was accepting a Grammy for it. He also recorded a number of solo albums, starting with 1972's Dixie Fried. His most recent, Dinosaurs Run in Circles, came out earlier this year. Dickinson's sons Cody and Luther lead the North Mississippi All-Stars.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Dickinson's health has been failing for several months. This past weekend, a number of local musicians played a benefit show to help cover his medical costs.

New Jack White Solo Single

Go here to hear the new Jack White solo single entitled "Fly Farm Blues". This song was allegedly written on the spot at the request of director Davis Guggenheim during the filming of the new guitar documentary It Might Get Loud (in theaters tomorrow), which features White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page.

Dead Man's Bones

Ryan Gosling, Oscar-nominated actor and dead ringer look-a-like to one of our contributers Brett Thompson, and his best buddy Zach Shields have formed a little band called Dead Man's Bones based on their mutual interest in ghouls and ghosts and goblins. If that's not weird enough, well they've also recruited a choir of about 30 kids ranging from the ages of 5 to 17 from the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, which is founded by Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and dressed them up like it's Halloween to help in their project. Their self-titled debut album is due out October 6th on Anti- records. Check out these tracks and the video below. I kinda dig it.

Noah and the Whale

UK indie-folk quartet Noah and the Whale is set to release its follow up to 2008's gold-selling Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down. The album, entitled The First Days of Spring, will be out October 6. If, however, the album is not all the Noah and the Whale you desire, The First Days of Spring will also come with a film. The trailer for the film is posted below. I guess this is becoming somewhat of a trend (See The Rentals, Sufjan Stevens), and I must admit I like it.

Colour Revolt Return

Colour Revolt makes their return to the stage on August 18th at Exit/In in Nashville. The band is scheduled to open for Heartless Bastards. Be sure not to miss this if you're in the area because it's going to be a great show. I'm extremely happy to see these guys return from a brief hiatus. Also, keep your eyes open for Jesse Coppenbarger's solo record due out sometime in September. For old time's sake, "Blood In Your Mouth" has been added to the playlist.
