Blasted This All Day

This song comes off Donny Hathway's 1972 album Live.  The album was recorded at two separate concerts; side one being from the Troubador in LA, and side two from the Bitter End in Manhattan.  Only one song from these recordings is by Mr. Hathaway with the rest being covers.  This song is obviously a John Lennon cover, but I bet Lennon wished he could blow like Hathaway.  There are an estimated 92 recorded covers of this song.  I haven't heard all of them obviously, but as my friend Cole said today, this is perfection.

!!!! New Spoon !!!!

You can check out the new Spoon single, "Written in Reverse", over at NPR right now.  This track comes off the band's 7th studio album coming out on January 19th called Transference.  That's the album cover up there, which is a photo by American photographer William Eggleston, and the photo is entitled "Sumner, Mississippi, c. 1970".  Well alright.

Girls

San Francisco's Girls made a pretty huge splash earlier this year after their debut album, aptly titled Album, hit the BNM section on Pitchfork, they released the NSFW (that's Not Safe For Work to all yous that don't know) video for their single "Lust for Life", and frontman Christopher Owens' crazy ass backstory was revealed. These 3 factors turned out to be a pretty nice catalyst to jump start a relatively unknown band into the limelight. Kind of helps also that the album is pretty solid. Check out all the links above, check out the safe for work video for their song "Laura", and stream the single "Lust for Life" below.

They have an open date on their tour between New Orleans and Birmingham on February 3rd, 2010. I think some folks are trying to get them to Jackson or Oxford. Who wants to help?

Paul Masson

Got a new country-folk sound for everyone to check out. His name is Paul Masson and he is out of Baltimore, MD. I asked him how he fell into the country-folk genre and his answer was fairly poignant:
"I'd say that the simplicity has a lot to do with a desire to capture the space that music can create when left to it's most basic components. And in the case of folk and country that leaves you with a singer, an acoustic guitar, drums, a bass, and a pedal steel guitar. Obviously more instruments could be included, but those were the ones that I heard in my head when I was writing these songs at my home. My favorite records all have this space as well. John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band is very sparse, but so powerful, Neil Young's "Harvest" leaves a lot to the imagination and almost the entire Hank Williams Sr. catalogue has that feel to it as well. I think music is often drowned in the idea of bigger this and that, and this record was made with the mindset that it was not going to sound like today's radio. I wanted it to have a more timeless feel, and I think after a lot of work we got it."
Simplicity and space definitely works on "My Girl Baltimore" a ballad about his love-affair with his home town where Masson's stark voice is complimented nicely with J. Tom Hnatow's (of These United States) pedal-steele. Check the song out at his myspace.

Florence and The Machine

Florence and The Machine are a great new British band. It's the moniker for Florence Welch and a cast of other musicians who provide the background for her outstanding vocal abilities. The band received their prominent push from the BBC and received exponentially more followers after doing a string of summer music festivals. The band's debut album, Lungs, was released physically in the U.S. on October 20th, 2009 via Island Records and earlier in the UK at the beginning of July. Chick's got some pipes. A cover of one of my personal favorites, Beirut's "Postcards from Italy", has been added to the playlist. Check out a live performance of their song "Between Two Lungs" below. Thanks to my homegirl, Beverly H-P, for the heads up.

The Rentals Fall EP

The Rentals, whose year in music is moving towards its end, has released Chapter 3 in their Songs About Time collection. The four song EP, along with the Spring and Summer releases, can be purchased for four dollars here.

Here is a good interview of Sufjan on his most recent instrumental release, The BQE, as well as the solitude he finds in traffic.

They're Back!!!

Ok, so maybe you are not as excited about The Get Up Kids return to music as I am, but let me preface it first. This is one of the bands that helped me make the move from Limp Bizkit to Sunny Day Real Estate, from Creed to Creedence Clearwater Revival, from Eminem to Jurassic 5. This was one of the first bands that matured my musical tastes and led me to where I am today. Not to mention that they were an awesome 'emo' band whose lead singer would not face the crowd during a concert for fear that his tears would drown the mosh-pit. Daytrotter writes, "It was the band that epitomized all of the growing pains and all of the newfound obstacles, all of the welled up emotions and their related effects that came rushing during those days of being upperclassmen in high school and moving onto college years, when everything began to get just a little more testy and a lot more intense." Who can forget Four Minute Mile and Something to Write Home about ? Even their later release On a Wire was great. Needless to say, when my friend Gray told me that they were back and had four free songs here, I went as quick as I could with loads of anticipation. This, after all, is one of the bands that helped make indie music mainstream music. They have a new album that is ready to be released, they are touring, they are releasing a ten year anniversary edition of Something to Write Home About, they are back and I am very glad. Do yourself a favor, check out their daytrotter session, and wallow in late 90's nostalgia.

Menomena offshoot Ramona Falls.

Julian Casablancas

Frontman of The Strokes debut solo record comes out this Tuesday. A little late on posting about it obviously, but what brings it up is that I danced my ass off to this bit-of-cheese single all Halloween night, so there. The album is entitled Phrazes for the Young. Enjoy.
